BREAKING: Tunji Disu Appointed New IGP As President Tinubu Sacks Egbetokun

L-R: President Bola Tinubu and new IGP Tunji Disu.

Tunji Disu has been appointed the new IGP following the sacking of Egbetokun by President Tinubu.

Newsone Nigeria reports that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reportedly sacked the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, in a major shake-up within the nation’s security leadership.

A report monitored on Premium Times quoted sources disclosed that Egbetokun was asked to step down during a meeting with the President at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Monday, February 24, 2026.

IGP Egbetokun is expected to be replaced by Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, as preparations for a formal handover ceremony are already underway.

Although there has been no official announcement as of press time, insiders within both the Presidency and the Nigeria Police Force confirmed that arrangements are being finalised for the transition.

Egbetokun was appointed as the 22nd Inspector-General of Police by President Tinubu on June 19, 2023, with his appointment later confirmed by the Nigeria Police Council on October 31, 2023.

Appointed as IGP at the age of 58, Egbetokun was due for retirement on September 4, 2024, upon reaching the mandatory age of 60. But his tenure was controversially extended by the President.

Before he was appointed the new IGP, Tunji Disu assumed duty as the Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) annex, Alagbon, Lagos State, Nigeria’s commercial city.

Disu assumed duty on February 9 to succeed Margaret Ochalla, who is currently attending a short-term professional training programme in the United States. Disu said he will inculcate the zero-tolerance approach to corruption, while calling on stakeholders to support the police in the fight against corruption.

“I appreciate the IGP, Kayode Egbetokun, for counting me worthy of this opportunity to serve in this capacity,” Disu was quoted in a statement by Mayegun Aminat, spokesperson of FCID Alagbon.

Disu holds a bachelor’s degree in English Education from Lagos State University. He also possesses master’s degrees in public administration and criminology, and security and legal psychology.

He joined the Nigeria Police Force in 1992 and has since served in key leadership roles nationwide.

Disu served as commander of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) in Lagos, head of the intelligence response team, commissioner of police in Rivers state and the Federal Capital Territory, and AIG in charge of the special protection unit.

Meanwhile, Newsone reports that the removal of IGP Kayode Egbetokun is expected to trigger significant changes within the leadership structure of the police force.
