US Explodes Over Sowore’s Re-Arrest By DSS

The United States (US) Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor Affairs (DRL) says it is deeply concerned that the convener of #RevolutionNow Movement, Omoyele Sowore, has been rearrested.

YaahooJournalist recalls that the DSS released Sowore on Thursday night after spending 124 days in detention.

The release followed a court ruling ordering DSS to release him in the next 24 hours.

However, the secret police on Friday morning re-arrested Sowore in the premises of the Federal High court, Abuja and reportedly took the activist to the DSS headquarters.

Apparently displeased with the arrest, the US issued a statement condemning the maltreatment of Sowore by officials of the DSS.

YaahooJournalist reports that the bureau is under the US Department of State, the equivalent of Nigeria’s foreign affairs ministry.

The office in a tweet on Saturday, said respect for the rule of law, judicial Independence, political and media freedom and due process are the principles of democracy.

“We are deeply concerned that #Sowore has been re-detained in #Nigeria, shortly after a court-ordered he be released on bail,” the bureau tweeted.

“Respect for rule of law, judicial independence, political and media freedom, and due process are key tenets of #democracy.”
