“I’ve Resumed As Lagos Assembly Speaker” – Impeached Obasa Declares

Impeached Obasa has declared that he has resumed as Lagos Assembly Speaker.
Newsone Nigeria reports that the ousted Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, announced that he has returned and assumed the position of Speaker of the Assembly on Thursday, February 27, 2025.
Obasa made this comment after returning to the Assembly for the first time since his impeachment on January 13. It was unclear how the Lagos politician arrived at the decision.
“I’ve resumed and I remain the Speaker of the Assembly,” Obasa said after storming the Assembly complex on Thursday morning with Police and State Security Service operatives as escorts.
Obasa, alongside security officials, had entered the Speaker’s Office around noon on Thursday. The development followed the withdrawal of the security aides of the Speaker, Mojisola Meranda.
Although Meranda has been unable to assume full control of the Assembly for some weeks, no fresh leadership election was held to reinstate Obasa who filed a lawsuit against his removal, but the courts were yet to decide on the matter.
Background of the story:
Over 90 percent of the lawmakers accused Obasa of poor leadership style, perpetual lateness to legislative functions and plenary, high-handedness and disregard for colleague lawmakers and the executive, especially the governor, abuse of office and privileges, intimidation and oppression of members among others.
Some All Progressives Congress bigwigs, notably former governors of Osun, Ogun, and Lagos states, Chief Bisi Akande, Segun Osoba, and Akinwunmi Ambode, respectively, among others, on the directive of President Bola Tinubu, had a series of meetings last weekend with political stakeholders in the state including members of the assembly in an attempt to resolve the Lagos Assembly crisis.
Indications from the said meeting are that both Obasa and Meranda might be stepping aside for another lawmaker to lead the house.
Chief Muraina Taiwo, a member of the Governors Advisory Council, noted that one of the seven lawmakers from Lagos West was being considered by the party leaders as the new Speaker.
Meanwhile, Newsone reports that Obasa’s declaration today marks the latest escalation in the political crisis that has engulfed the Lagos Assembly for several weeks.
