Kanu’s US lawyer to drag FG before ICC over rights’ violation

Bruce Fein, the American lawyer of Nnamdi Kanu, has threatened to drag Nigeria to the International Criminal Court over alleged gross violation of his client’s rights. Fein was in court on Wednesday to monitor the trial of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, but was denied access into the courtroom.

The legal team of detained leader of Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, yesterday, staged a walkout as the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja commenced its proceedings on the seven-count treasonable felony charge the Federal Government preferred against him. Their action followed refusal of operatives of the Department of State Services, DSS, to allow some members of Kanu’s defence team gain access into the courtroom.

The legal team of the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, on Wednesday, walked out on Binta Nyako, the judge of the Abuja division of the Federal High Court handling the separatist’s trial. Members of the defence team, led by Ifeanyi Ejiofor, were earlier seated in court but walked out just before the arrival of the judge about 10 a.m. Thereafter, the judge adjourned the suit till January 19 and 20, 2022 for trial.

Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), which is agitating for the breakaway of southeastern Nigeria, is due to return to a court in the capital, Abuja, on Wednesday. Kanu has been charged with “terrorism”, treason and perpetuating falsehoods against President Muhammadu Buhari, mainly through broadcasts on the controversial Radio Biafra outlet and also through social media. He had pleaded not guilty during his last court date on October 21.

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), yesterday, gave the Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, till the end of this month to release innocent Biafra agitators arrested and clamped in various cells in the state or face the wrath of the organisation. In a statement signed by its Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, in Enugu, IPOB urged Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Igbo religious leaders, civil society groups and women organisations to caution the governor against arresting innocent members of the group, stressing that it will no longer tolerate the hounding of its members in Imo.
