JUST IN: NAFDAC Workers Embark On Indefinite Strike Over Welfare Issues, Others

NAFDAC Workers will begin an indefinite strike on Monday.

Newsone Nigeria reports that National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) workers have resolved to commence an indefinite strike from Monday, October 7, 2024.

This online news platform understands that the leadership of the Federal Area Council of the Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria issued the NAFDAC Workers‘ strike directive.

The strike which will begin at 00:01 hours on Monday, 7th October 2024, follows the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum issued to NAFDAC management, which failed to address concerns raised by the agency’s branch of the Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria in a communique from a congress meeting held on September 20.

According to the union; the management refused to promote deserving staff of the agency who participated in 2024 promotion interview despite scoring above the stipulated pass mark. The management cited the unavailability of vacancies even for mid-level cadre.

One of the staff members who spoke to our correspondent on the condition of anonymity said it is demoralizing, having worked tirelessly to help the agency attain the World Health Organization listed authority maturity level 3, they are being denied promotion for frivolous reasons. Over

The personnel lamented that 700 staff participated in the promotion interview, but only 200+ were promoted.

Newsone reports that the union also noted among other pressing issues that the management failed to comply with an agreement signed between federal government, NAFDAC management, and the union in 2022,

Secretary of the union, Com. Salih Ahmed Aledeh emphasised the importance of collective action in a statement.

He said, “Do remember that the success of this action is dependent on our collective determination and resolve.”

“The union has directed all Zonal Coordinators and State Representatives to mobilize members in their respective formations and ensure total compliance with the strike notice.”

“They are also required to provide continuous updates on their efforts.”

“This indefinite strike is expected to significantly impact NAFDAC’s operations, potentially affecting food and drug regulation in Nigeria. The duration of the strike remains uncertain, pending resolution of the issues raised by the union.”

The statement added, “As this situation develops, stakeholders in Nigeria’s health sector and the general public will be watching closely for any developments or negotiations between NAFDAC management and the striking workers.”
