Court Grants 67 Arraigned Minors N10m Bail Each Over EndBadGovernance Protest
Court has granted 67 arraigned minors N10m bail each over EndBadGovernance Protest.
Newsone Nigeria reports that an Abuja Federal High Court has granted bail in the sum of N10 million each to 67 minors who are among #EndBadGovernance protesters arraigned on Friday.
This online news platform understands that the EndBadGovernance protesters are facing treason charges. The protesters, mostly minors, were arraigned before Justice Obiora Egwuatu.
They are facing a 10-count charge bordering on alleged treason, as well as conspiracy to commit a felony with intent to destabilize Nigeria, an offence contrary to Section 96, and punishable under Section 97, of the Penal Code Act.
The defendants looked malnourished, and four of them were hurriedly rushed out of the courtroom as they couldn’t stand on their feet. Looking very sickly, they wriggled in pain on the floor of the court.
While granting bail to minors who are below 15 years, Justice Obiora Egwuatu said they are expected to present one surety who must be a civil servant.
They were arrested and detained during the nationwide protest in the country from August 1 to 10, 2024. The EndBadGovernance protest was sparked by widespread economic hardship, leading many Nigerians to the streets to express their grievances.
Newsone reports that the 76 protesters were arrested in Abuja, Kaduna, Gombe, Jos, Katsina and Kano.
They have been accused of treason, among other offences.
