This Nigeria news platform understands that Kanu is facing charges related to treasonable felony and has been in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) since his arrest in June 2021.

The court, however, has ordered an accelerated hearing of the case. In her ruling, Justice Nyako stated that the court would only grant an accelerated hearing and ordered the prosecution to call its first witness.

While the decision was not welcomed by Kanu’s counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, he expressed his displeasure and said that the legal team could not proceed with the proceedings if not allowed to speak with their client.

Ejimakor added that it has been challenging to have a meeting with Kanu in the custody of the DSS, as their conversations were always monitored, and that Kanu is still wearing the same outfit that the court ordered to be changed.

He alleged unfair treatment of his client, which he said contravened the Nigerian Constitution.

As a result, Kanu’s team of lawyers asked for a standdown of the case to enable them to consult with their client, which the court granted.
