Former Super Eagles goalkeeper, Peter Rufai is dead.
Newsone Nigeria reports that 61-year-old Peter Rufai, a legendary goalkeeper of the Super Eagles, Nigeria’s men’s football team, passed away on Thursday morning, July 3, 2025, after a long illness that kept him out of the public eye for some time.
Rufai, regarded as one of Nigeria’s greatest goalkeepers, the former Stationery Stores and Go Ahead Eagles shot stopper, had an illustrious career, earning 65 caps for the national team, including appearances in two World Cups and the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) triumph.
Though the family is yet to announce the death of Dodomayana, as he is fondly called, a top Lagos State Government official confirmed it, according to Radio Nigeria.
Meanwhile, Newsone reports that Peter Rufai’s death is coming on the same day Liverpool forward Diogo Jota died in a car accident in Spain at the age of 28.
