Legendary Nigerian singer, Onyeka Onwenu is dead.

Newsone Nigeria reports that a legendary Nigerian singer/songwriter, actress, human rights, and social activist, Onyeka Onwenu has passed on.

This online news platform understands that the Legendary Onyeka Onwenu died after performing at Stella Okoli’s birthday party on Tuesday evening, July 30, 2024.

A report monitored on TheNiche by Newsone Nigeria quoted an eyewitness to have said that Onyeka Onwenu slumped after performing at the party and was rushed to the hospital where she was confirmed dead.

The singer was said to have died at the Reddington Hospital in Lagos after slumping at the 80th birthday party of Mrs. Okoli, a pharmacist, and founder of Emzor pharmaceutical manufacturing company in Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial city.

A guest at the party who spoke to TheNiche said they thought it was all a joke. The report quoted the guest saying: “I have never seen anything like this before. She had just come down from the stage after performing energetically and admirably as always. And went to her seat where she slumped. It is still like a dream.”

Another eyewitness at the party who confirmed the sad news to TheNiche said: “It is very sad. Onyeka Onwenu just performed at the birthday of Mrs. Stella Okoli today, and after performing, she slumped. She was taken to Reddington Hospital and she couldn’t make it.”

The report quoted another source who was among the people who rushed Onyeka Onwenu to the hospital saying, “Apparently, she had a heart attack. The doctor has advised that the body should be kept until later this morning. It is unbelievable.”

Born on January 17, 1952, Newsone reports that Onyeka Onwenu was a Nigerian singer/songwriter, actress, human rights and social activist, journalist, politician, and former X Factor series judge. Dubbed the “Elegant Stallion” by the Nigerian press, she was a former chairperson of the Imo State Council for Arts and Culture.

Tributes pour in for Onyeka Onwenu

Nigerian journalist, Jackson Ude took to the micro-blogging site, X formerly known as Twitter to morning Onyeka Onwenu’s death. Ude uploaded the picture of the late singer with the caption: “GOODNIGHT ONYEKA ONWENU Rest in Peace, Africa’s Golden Voice!”

Meanwhile, Onyeka Onwenu’s cause of death is still sketchy as of the time of filing this report.
