Police Officer Who Killed Bolanle Raheem Sentenced to Death by Hanging
A police officer who killed Bolanle Raheem has been sentenced to death by hanging.
Newsone reports that a Lagos State High Court sitting at the Tafawa Balewa Square annex, Igbosere, Lagos island has convicted and sentenced to death by hanging, a suspended Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Drambi Vandi for the murder of Lagos-based lawyer Mrs Omobolanle Raheem.
This online news platform understands that the presiding judge, Justice Ibironke Harrison held that the prosecution, the Lagos State Government, has proven the case against the convict beyond all reasonable doubt.
“The court finds the defendant guilty on one count of murder. You will be hanged by the neck till you are dead.” the judge held.
Newsone Nigeria recalls that on Sunday, December 25, 2022, Bolanle Raheem who was pregnant at the time, was shot dead in an incident involving Vandi and other police officers at the Ajah underbridge, Lagos.
ASP Vandi was said to have pulled the trigger, with the bullet piercing the chest of the deceased. The lawyer was declared dead at the third hospital she was taken to after the shooting incident.
The incident elicited widespread outrage, with many Nigerians calling for an investigation into the activities of police officers attached to the Ajiwe police station, Ajah in Lagos State.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu-led Lagos state government subsequently arraigned Vandi on a one-count charge of murder. The Police officer who pleaded not guilty was sentenced to death by hanging for the murder of Bolanle Raheem today, Monday, October 9, 2023, by Justice Ibironke Harrison.
