Emir Sanusi, Powerful Kano Emir In Fresh Trouble In 2020
Emir Sanusi, the Emir of Kano in northern Nigeria, is in fresh trouble as the Kano State House of Assembly has set up an eight-man committee to investigate alleged violations of culture and traditions as well as religious norms of Kano against Emir Muhammad Sanusi II.
NewsOne Nigeria reports that the committee on public petition was mandated to investigate a petition submitted before the house by an association and an individual over Emir Sanusi’s attitude and character which they claimed was in dispute to the culture and religion.
This online news platform understands that the committee, which is headed by Hamisu Chidare, the Deputy Speaker, and seven others were given one week to investigate and submit its reports as well as recommend appropriate actions after extensive deliberations by the House.
NewsOne Nigeria reports that groups in question are Kano State for Promotion of Education and Culture and Mohammed Mukthar Ja’en Yamma, Gwale local government on the petition, the two groups appealed to the lawmakers to investigate the alleged purported misconduct and take an appropriate stand on it.
The petitions were read by the Chairman of the House Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, and member representing Sumaila Constituency, Hamza Massu. He explained that one of the petitions was signed by the Chairman of Society for the Promotion of Education and Culture, Mohammed Bello, while the other was signed by Mohammed Mukhtar Ja’in Yamma.
According to the petitions, as presented before the legislators, Emir Sanusi should be investigated over his nonchalant attitudes which they alleged were against the religion, culture and traditions of Kano people.
Massu added that “Apart from the written petitions, the petitioners have also presented some videotapes which they said the contents will serve as a proof of their petitions.
“The petitioners want the assembly to investigate the Emir and take necessary actions on the issue.”
Legislators tasked on Emir Sanusi
Following the presentation of the petitions, the Kano Assembly legislators deliberated and ordered the standing committee of the House on complaints and petitions to commence an action. The Committee, which the Deputy Speaker of the House, Engr. Hamisu Chidari was co-opted to lead the investigation, was given one week within which to present its report to the House.
Also, Kabiru Hasaan, the Majority leader, and Labaran Ayuba, the Chief Whip of the assembly, were added as supporting members of the committee.
Shortly after the committee was ordered to commence the investigation, a member representing Dala Constituency, Lawal Hussain (PDP), suggested that the content of the petition should be read in public but the Speaker briefly explained to him that according to section 3, subsection (b) of the House Rule, there was no need for further explanation of such petition in public.
“We have given our committee the go-ahead to go through the petitions, look into the issues and report back to the House for further deliberations on the issue,” he said.
Meanwhile, this online news platform understands that the atmosphere in the ancient city of Kano remains calm as the new development continue to generate discussion.
