After a trial that concluded Dahmer was sane at the time of the killings, Dahmer made a statement to the court in which he said: “I realise society will never be able to forgive me. I am solely responsible for what I did.

“I never wanted freedom; this has never been an attempt to gain it. In all honesty, I wished for my own demise.

Wisconsin is one of just 12 states without the death penalty, despite widespread calls for it. Since 1853, when it was formally outlawed in the state, it hasn’t existed.

The first to abolish the death penalty was Wisconsin, which was followed by Maine in 1887, Hawaii and Alaska in 1957, and Michigan in 1963. Thus, despite the severity of his horrible acts, Dahmer could not be executed when he was tried in 1991.

At first, a Wisconsin court gave Dahmer 15 life sentences—one for each of the victims he had murdered in Milwaukee, where he had lived. He was extradited to Ohio three months later, when he was prosecuted for the murder of Steven Hicks, his first victim, and was given a second life sentence, increasing his total to 16 life terms.

Although the death penalty is an option in Ohio, Dahmer received a second life sentence. The New York Times reports that because the murder took place in 1978 before the death penalty was reinstated, Dahmer “faces no possibility of execution.”

How did Jeffrey Dahmer die?

Dahmer was expected to remain in prison for the remainder of his life without the chance of parole. He was only in the system for three years and four months, though.

Christopher Scarver, a fellow prisoner, shot Dahmer fatally while on duty. He beat Dahmer and another prisoner, Jesse Anderson, with a 20-inch metal bar that he had stolen from the weight room.

Scarver received two more life sentences in addition to his existing life term for murder. He is still incarcerated in Colorado, at the age of 53.

After being cremated, Dahmer’s remains were given to his parents. Dahmer’s brain was kept in a freezer for a year after he passed away while his parents debated over whether or not to donate it to science.

A judge decided that the serial killer’s brain should be burnt rather than researched after hearing the case in court. At the end of 1995, it was destroyed.
