Newsone Nigeria reports that the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) registration is the first step for students who want to write the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) in Nigeria. This exam is mandatory for admission into universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education in Nigeria. If you’re planning to register for the 2026/2027 session, this article provides a step-by-step guide to ensure a smooth registration process.

As of today, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has officially released the 2026 UTME registration guidelines and specified that registration is expected to begin in January.

Key Updates and Guidelines
  • Registration Start Date: While the exact date for registration to start is not yet definitively confirmed by all official channels, several sources indicate it is scheduled to begin on January 26th or 31st, 2026. Candidates are advised to wait for final confirmation on the JAMB official website.
  • Mandatory NIN: The National Identification Number (NIN) is a compulsory requirement for all UTME and Direct Entry (DE) candidates.
  • New Policy on Admission Status: A new policy requires all candidates registering for the 2026 UTME to declare their current admission status to combat impersonation and fraud.
  • CBT Centre Accreditation: JAMB has concluded the accreditation of Computer-Based Test (CBT) centers nationwide for the examination process, putting comprehensive measures in place to prevent irregularities.
  • Required Documents/Preparations: Before registration begins, candidates should get the following ready:
    • Their National Identification Number (NIN).
    • A registered phone number linked to their NIN for generating a profile code.
    • A functional email address.
    • Decided course and institution choices, ensuring they meet the specific subject combinations.
Important Advice
  • Rely on Official Sources: Avoid unofficial news circulating online. Always verify information through the official JAMB website or its verified social media handles to prevent being scammed or misinformed.
  • Start Preparing Early: Candidates are strongly advised to begin preparing for the exam using the official JAMB syllabus, recommended textbooks, and CBT practice software.
  • Age Requirement: Candidates must be at least 16 years old to be eligible for registration.

No plan to hike 2026 UTME, Direct Entry form fees – JAMB

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has assured Nigerians that the cost of application documents for the 2026 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination and Direct Entry is unlikely to increase.

The Board assured “parents, guardians, and prospective candidates” that it has not raised fees for either UTME or DE “in the last nine years.”

In fact, registration costs have been “reduced for prospective candidates within the nine years of the existence of the current administration,” it said.

JAMB made the clarification in its Weekly Bulletin, obtained on Monday, stressing that any increase in the future would only occur if absolutely necessary to sustain the integrity and quality of the examination process.
