PDP Expels Wike, Fayose, Anyanwu, Others At National Convention [FULL LIST]

L-R: Anyanwu, Fayose, Wike.

PDP expelled Wike, Fayose, Anyanwu, and other politicians during its National Convention on Saturday.

Newsone Nigeria reports that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Nigeria’s main opposition party, has expelled the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and a former governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose, from the party, for anti-party activities.

This online news platform understands that the main opposition party has also expelled its National Secretary, Samuel Anyanwu, and eight others.

The party unanimously voted to expel them for engaging in anti-party activities and fostering disunity through a series of litigations against the party’s interests at the national convention in Ibadan, Oyo State, southwest Nigeria.

A chieftain of the PDP, Bode George, moved the motion for the expulsion of 11 key members, citing what he described as activities inconsistent with the party’s collective interest as reasons for the move.

The chairman of the PDP in Bauchi State quickly seconded the motion.

The Governor of Bauchi State, Bala Muhammed, put the vote forward for members to adopt and ratify the expulsion of those involved, and it was unanimously accepted.

Meanwhile, the crisis within the opposition party appears to be taking a new dimension with the expulsion of Mr Wike and ten other political figures in the PDP.

While calls for the removal of some of these officials, particularly Wike, had been on for years, the timing and circumstances surrounding the expulsion introduce new political implications.

Previously, the minister was a powerful force within the PDP despite serving in an APC-led administration.

The FCT Minister has accused the Damagum-led NWC of violating party principles and planning an illegitimate convention. For him, the struggle is about controlling the party’s structure ahead of 2027, having declared his support for a second term for APC’s President Bola Tinubu.

PDP has been engulfed in a series of internal disputes since the 2023 general elections. Specifically, the party split into two factions after disagreeing over preparations for the national convention in which new leaders were expected to emerge to replace the current National Working Committee (NWC), led by Mr Damagum.

Wike’s loyalists argue that the party violated its constitution by failing to conduct valid congresses. While Mr Damagun insisted that the convention will hold as scheduled, nonetheless.

The disagreement, however, led to conflicting court orders. There are currently three subsisting judgements on the two-day convention.
