The person behind VeryDarkMan arrest at GTBank has been revealed.
Newsone Nigeria reports that controversial social media critic, Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), was taken into custody by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Nigeria’s anti-graft agency.
This was after he was arrested by officers of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) at the premises of Guaranty Trust Bank (GTBank) in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital, on Friday, May 2, 2025.
VeryDarkMan’s arrest came after the social activist criticized GTBank over alleged unauthorised withdrawals from his mother’s account. His vocal demand for accountability gained widespread attention online before his detention.
Barrister Deji Adeyanju, the legal representative of VDM, confirmed the incident on the micro-blogging site, X, formerly known as Twitter. “JUST IN: VDM arrested by the police at GTB. Spoke to them before he was arrested. This is absolutely unacceptable. Demanding accountability is not a crime,” Adeyanju posted.
Adeyanju, in a follow-up tweet, added that VDM was arrested alongside a friend, identified only as C-Park. “A team of policemen arrested VDM at GTB. He was arrested with his friend C Park but they left his mom alone,” he said.
The human rights activist and lawyer, however, took to his X handle some minutes later saying, “VDM DETAINED AT EFCC: Our lawyers led by the Head of our firm @Marvin_Omorogbe just met VDM’s friend who was arrested together with him in EFCC custody. VDM refused to come out of the cell; that he won’t see anyone. VDM was locked inside the GTB exit door for over 5mins to enable EFCC arrest him and his friend. We will be taking legal actions against GTB for the inhumane treatment meted out to our client.” [sic]
A day after VeryDarkMan’s arrest at GTBank, Nigerian singer, Seun Kuti, reveals in a latest video on his IG page, that VeryDarkMan was arrested because of his case with a gospel musician, whose name he failed to mention.

Though it is unclear which gospel musician led to the arrest of Verydarkman, Newsone, however, recalls that a Chief Magistrate Court in Wuse, Abuja, had on Thursday, March 13, 2025, issued a bench warrant for the arrest of VDM for alleged defamation of renowned female gospel singer, Mercy Chinwo.
In his ruling, Magistrate Emmanuel Iyana ordered the Nigeria Police Force and other law enforcement agencies to arrest VDM and produce him before the court to answer to the allegations levelled against him by Chinwo.
The court held that, having failed to honour a summons issued against him on March 5, he should be arrested and made to appear in court. The magistrate dismissed a plea by his counsel, Deji Adeyanju, to personally produce his client on the next adjourned date.
VeryDarkMan was accused of making a libellous statement against Chinwo in several posts shared via his social media platforms in February, accusing her of breaching her contract with her former record label, owned by Ezekiel Onyedikachukwu.
VDM had alleged that Chinwo diverted funds from shows without paying the label in violation of her contract terms with the label.
In the lawsuit dated March 3, and filed by Pelumi Olajengbesi, her lawyer, Chinwosaid VDM’s comments were “malicious, and damaging” to the! her reputation.
Olajengbesi said that VDM, though not involved in the dispute between Chinwo and EeZee Tee, decided to deliberately present the matter in a way that has now tarnished the singer’s image.
Meanwhile, Newsone reports that the police have not issued any official statement regarding VeryDarkMan’s arrest, and it remains unclear whether formal charges have been filed.
