Senate Sets Date To Grill Security Chiefs Over Insecurity in Nigeria

Published by

The Senate has set a date to grill Security Chiefs over insecurity in Nigeria.

Newsone Nigeria reports that the Nigerian Senate has disclosed that the security chiefs summoned last week over the rising insecurity will be grilled between February 7 and 8 to find a way to curb the menace of criminals in the country.

This online news platform understands that Senator Adetokunbo Abiru (APC, Lagos East), the chairman of the Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance, and Other Financial Institutions, dropped the hint on Tuesday, February 6, 2024.

Senator  Abiru also announced that the planned interface with the CBN Governor, Olayemi Cardoso, has been shifted to Friday due to the meeting with the security chiefs.

Newsone recalls that the Senate summoned the security chiefs last Tuesday to appear before it in plenary for the required explanations on the worsening security situation in the country. Similarly, its Committee on Banking summoned the CBN governor to appear before it this Tuesday on the state of the nation’s economy and the free fall of the naira.

Members of the committee, in line with the resolution, gathered in Room 211, the venue of the planned interface with the CBN governor, from 3 pm to 4:30 pm before resolving to postpone the sitting to Friday.

Announcing the postponement, the chairman of the committee, Senator Abiru, said: “After waiting for close to two hours for the CBN governor on the planned interface, we have resolved to postpone it to Friday this week by 9 am prompt.

“The postponement of the interface between our committee and the CBN Governor arose from the fact that he and other managers of the nation’s economy have been interfacing with our colleagues in the House of Representatives since morning without knowing when exactly the session would end.

“We would have fixed Wednesday or Thursday this week as a new day for the interface but the Senate as a whole, has fixed the two days, for very critical and constructive engagement with the Service Chiefs.

“This made us eventually settle for Friday this week for interface with the CBN Governor by 9 am prompt. Communication to this effect would be forwarded to the CBN Governor and possibly other government officials managing the economy.”
