Tobi Amusan has clinched Silver in the 100m Hurdles at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.
Newsone Nigeria reports that Nigeria’s sprint hurdler, Tobi Amusan, claimed the silver medal in the women’s 100m hurdles at the Tokyo 2025 World Athletics Championships, clocking an impressive 12.29 seconds in the final.
Competing under the floodlights of the National Stadium, Amusan delivered a strong performance but was edged out by Ditaji Kambundji of Switzerland, who stormed to victory in 12.24 seconds, setting a new Swiss national record.
The bronze medal went to the United States’ Grace Stark in 12.34 seconds, while compatriot Masai Russell finished fourth in 12.44 seconds.
Poland’s Pia Skrzyszowska and the Bahamas’ Devynne Charlton shared fifth place with season’s bests of 12.49, followed by Jamaica’s Danielle Williams (12.53) and the Netherlands’ Nadine Visser (12.56).
Earlier in the day, Amusan secured her place in the final with a commanding semifinal win, clocking 12.36 seconds (-0.2) ahead of Visser (12.45) and Skrzyszowska (12.51).
The result denied Amusan, the defending champion, a second consecutive world title. Still, it marked a significant achievement for Nigeria, delivering the country’s first podium finish at these championships.
The 28-year-old Nigeria athletic star, Amusan, now adds a silver to her glittering résumé, which includes five national titles, three consecutive Diamond League trophies (2021–2023), and her historic world record of 12.12 seconds set in Eugene in 2022 — a performance that also brought Nigeria its first-ever World Championships gold.
This silver extends Nigeria’s overall tally at the World Championships to 12 medals, with Amusan remaining the only Nigerian athlete to strike gold in the competition’s history.
The National Sports Commission (NSC) hailed Amusan’s achievement, praising her consistency and resilience.
