Video: Police Officer Chasing "Yahoo Boys" Mistakenly Kills Student Going for WAEC Exam in Ibadan

A police officer has mistakenly killed a student in Ibadan while chasing “Yahoo Boys“.

Newsone Nigeria reports that a stray bullet shot by an officer of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has killed a secondary school student on his way to write the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) in Ibadan, Oyo State, southwest Nigeria.

This online news platform understands that the tragic incident took place around the Welfare Hospital area in Alakia, Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, on Tuesday, May 19, 2025.

According to eyewitnesses, the police officer in pursuit of a fleeing vehicle on the Gbagi Market Road opened fire in an attempt to stop suspected internet fraudsters popularly known as “Yahoo boys”. One of the bullets missed its target and struck a schoolboy who was inside his father’s car alongside his twin brother.

The student was said to have been immediately rushed to Welfare Hospital in Ibadan but was declared dead on arrival. According to bystanders, the deceased and his twin were en route to their examination center at the time of the incident.

In a video published on the micro-blogging site, X formerly known as Twitter, by social media influencer Oyindamola, the student lies lifeless on a hospital stretcher, with an injury around his waist, which sympathisers claimed was from the gunshot.

Oyindamola captioned the video: “Happened at Alakia express, Ibadan this morning!! Nigerian police allegedly chased suspected “yahoo boys” in a car, firing at their tires, but tragically hit a secondary school student heading to his WAEC exam by “mistake” …. Oriyomi Hamzat is currently at the scene too.”

A hole was also observed in the father’s car, which could have been caused by a gunshot from the Nigerian police officer. There were also blood stains on the car’s floor. Witnesses were seen sympathising with the boy and expressing frustration over persistent police brutality in the area.

The sympathizers and market traders at the scene in a protest took the boy’s body to the Oyo State Secretariat. There, demonstrators demanded immediate justice and sought an audience with the Oyo State governor, Seyi Makinde.

Meanwhile, Newsone reports that the Oyo State government and the Oyo State Police Command had yet to issue a statement as of the time of press time.
