WAEC Shifts WASSCE 2020 Over Coronavirus
The West African Examination Council (WAEC) has agreed to shift the date of its WASSCE 2020 over the outbreak of Coronavirus.
NewsOne Nigeria reports that WASSCE 2020 was scheduled to begin on August 4, 2020, but the federal government said students of unity schools would not participate owing to COVID-19 concerns. The Federal Government reiterated COVID-19 concerns when the team, led by Emeka Nwajiuba, the Minister of State for Education, met with members of WAEC in Abuja early this week.
Reacting to the Federal Government’s COVID-19 concerns, WAEC team eventually agreed with the federal government and settled to shift the date of the examination, a source at the meeting told ThisDay.
A statement signed by Ben Goong, the Director of Information, Federal Ministry of Education, quoted Minister Nwajiuba as saying WAEC is considering shifting the date of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
The Minister of State for Education said that further consultation would be held with four other countries on new examination date.
“We appreciate the concern shown by all stakeholders and note the divergent views expressed on the matter.
“Parents should be rest assured that the safety of our students and teachers is paramount as we work assiduously towards speedy reopening of our schools for the exit classes to take external examinations,” Nwajiuba said.
