Newsone reports that no fewer than three University of Virginia football players are dead and two other students were wounded Sunday night following an on-campus shooting, according to university police. The suspect, identified as Christopher Darnell Jones Jr., was taken into police custody Monday morning after a manhunt overnight.

During a news conference Monday, UVA President James. E. Ryan announced the shooting victims as Lavel Davis Jr., Devin Chandler and D’Sean Perry. They were all members of the UVA football team.

The two other student victims, whose identities have not been released, were wounded and are being treated for their injuries at the University of Virginia Medical Center. One of the victims is in good condition and the other is critical, Ryan said.

“I have spoken with four of the families and I spoke directly to the student who was in good condition,” UVA President Ryan said. “This is an unimaginably sad day for our community. The entire university community is grieving this morning. My heart is broken for the victims and their families and for all those who knew and loved them, and they are all in my prayers. As I said before, when I see our students I see my own kids. And I cannot imagine anything worse for a parent and to lose a child please know we will do everything we can to honor their lives. And we’ll come together soon as a community to mourn these losses.”

The families of the victims have been notified, Ryan added.

A spokesperson for Perry’s family released the following statement on their behalf:

“On behalf of D’Sean’s parents, Happy and Sean Perry, and their entire family, we thank the South Florida and Charlottesville communities for the outpouring of support during this impossibly tragic time. Right now, Happy and Sean will not speak publicly about the incident as their grief is only beginning, and out of respect for the University of Virginia community which has been terrorized by another mass shooting in the United States. If the Perry’s choose to speak publicly in the coming days and months, we will alert the media.
