NewsOne Nigeria reports that the daughter of South African liberation hero and anti-apartheid activist, Nelson Mandela, Zindzi Mandela is dead.

This online news medium understands that Zindzi Mandela died in a hospital in Johannesburg on Sunday evening at the age of 59. She was serving as South Africa’s ambassador to Denmark since 2015 before her death.

The news that ambassador Zindzi Mandela is dead has gone viral but Zindzi Mandela cause of death has not been revealed yet as at the time of filing this report.

Tributes pour in Zindzi Mandela

The spokesman for the governing African National Congress, Pule Mabe, described Zindzi Mandela death as “untimely”.

“She still had a role to play in the transformation of our own society and a bigger role to play even in the African National Congress,” Mabe said, adding further details would be provided in due course.

Tobias Elling Rehfeld, Denmark’s ambassador to South Africa, said he was “saddened” to learn about her death.

“I am so saddened to learn that Ambassador Zindzi Mandela has passed away. Zindzi was a dear colleague working tirelessly and with a smile to nurture and grow the strong friendship between SouthAfrica and Denmark. My deep condolence to the Mandela family,” he tweeted.

Similarly, South African President, Cyril Ramaphosa has mourned the death of Zindzi Mandela, the youngest daughter of South Africa’s ex-president, Nelson Mandela.

In a statement via his official Twitter page, Ramaphosa described Zindzi as a fearless political activist who was a leader in her own right.

His words: “I offer my deep condolences to the Mandela family as we mourn the passing of a fearless political activist who was a leader in her own right. Our sadness is compounded by this loss being visited upon us just days before the world marks the birthday of the great Nelson Mandela.

“Zindzi Mandela was a household name nationally and internationally, who during our years of struggle brought home the inhumanity of the apartheid system and the unshakeable resolve of our fight for freedom.

“After our liberation, she became an icon of the task we began of transforming our society and stepping into spaces and opportunities that had been denied to generations of South Africans.#RIPZindziMandela.”

Who was Zindzi Mandela?

Zindziswa Mandela also known as Zindzi Mandela-Hlongwane, was a South African politician who was serving as her country’s ambassador to Denmark at the time of her death.

She is survived by her four children Zoleka, Zondwa, Bambatha and Zwelabo and her husband Molapo. Zindzi Mandela death was confirmed by her son Bambatha. He posted a photo of his late mother on Instagram, with the caption: “Lala ngo xolo Madlomo”, which translates to English as “Sleep in peace Madam”.
