FG will fix date for national census – NPC
The National Population Commission (NPC), has said a new date for the National Census was yet to be fixed but it would be done by the Federal Government.
NPC said its focus is to ensure that all resources expended are safeguarded ahead of the 2023 Population and Housing Census in the country.
Mr Darlington Okereke, NPC’s Federal Commissioner in Ebonyi, said this at a one-day Breakfast Meeting for Media Executives on Friday in Abakaliki.
Okereke said the safeguard was necessary to avoid starting preparations all over when a new date is fixed.
“We also gathered to enlighten you on the next steps forward in the light of the postponement of the conduct by the former President,” he added.
The Commissioner noted that it had carried out all the preparatory activities towards the census exercise, including the Enumeration Area Demarcation (EAD) and conduct of pre-tests and trial census amongst others.
“We have conducted recruitment and training of census field staff, procurement and configuration of Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs), the establishment of ICT infrastructures and logistics support, advocacy and publicity activities.
“The most important task before the commission is to sustain and reinforce the relevance of these activities to the successful conduct of the 2023 census.
“This will ensure that the nation does not have to start afresh the preparations, thereby saving cost.
“The Commission has laid a solid foundation for future censuses,” Okereke stated.

NPPC Management Speaks On Digital Postcode System In Collaboration With NIPOST
In today’s Latest NPC Training News, NPC management said, as part of efforts to bequeath to our dear country, a standard and digital postcode system that aids the economic, political, social and physical development of Nigeria, the Commission, in collaboration with the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST), is training functionaries for the ground-truthing of Postcode Area (PCA) Delineation Model at the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA)’s Office in Abuja.
A postcode system assigns a unique alphanumeric code to every dwelling entity in the country, taking into consideration its unique use (residential, commercial, medicare or educational) and geographical location.
The 2013 National Addressing Policy demanded that the existing 6-digit numeric National Postcode be extended to enhance the granularity of the postcode. The extended postcode framework is a collaboration between NPC and NIPOST.
The Commission has derived a huge volume of geospatial resources during the Enumeration Area Demarcation (EAD) exercise for the 2023 Population and Housing Census, which includes a digital map of all buildings and post offices in Nigeria, that NIPOST has decided to leverage to delineate the entire country into distinct Postcode Areas with unique identities.
This training session will train Supervisors, Enumerators, and GIS officers who will be on the field for 7 days to validate the Model in Bwari Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. This is a micro-test, after which the whole country will be delineated into Postcode Areas.
Those in attendance to declare the training workshop open today included the Digital Chairman of NPC, Hon. Nasir Isa kwarra; Postmaster General of NIPOST, Hon. Sunday Adeyemi Adepoju; Director General of NASRDA, Dr. Halilu Anmad Shaba; NPC Federal Commissioner, Akwa Ibom, and other senior officers of the relevant agencies.
